The word free can describe very different arrangements. A permanent free tier, a temporary trial and an open-source licence answer different questions. Understanding those questions helps you choose a tool that will still fit your needs later.
Separate price, duration and rights
Begin with three checks: what does it cost today, how long does that arrangement last, and what are you allowed to do with the software or material? A product can be free to use without giving you the right to redistribute its code. Open source describes licence rights, rather than a guarantee that every associated service costs nothing.
| Label | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Free resource | Can I use the advertised material without a payment? |
| Free tier | Which usage or feature limits apply? |
| Free trial | When does access end or billing begin? |
| Freemium | Which useful features require an upgrade? |
| Open source | What does the specific licence allow and require? |
| Conditional free | Do my country, status or intended use qualify? |
Check the exact route to the benefit
Use the provider’s official page and follow the route for the benefit you want. Some projects offer both a free direct download and paid store editions. Some learning resources provide materials without providing a qualification. These arrangements can be legitimate, but the distinction matters.
For example, Krita distinguishes its direct downloads from store versions, while MIT OpenCourseWare explains that its materials do not award MIT credit or certificates. Those are different kinds of free access, not interchangeable promises.
Find the point where a cost can appear
Look for restrictions on exports, storage, collaboration, commercial use, support and access duration. If a card is required, read the renewal and cancellation instructions before entering payment information. A statement that something is “free to start” does not explain what happens after the start.
Save the relevant terms or a dated note for your own reference. Providers can change their offers. If a limitation is important to your decision, check it again immediately before relying on it.
Choose around a realistic use case
Describe one task you want to finish and estimate how often you will do it. Then compare the relevant limits rather than the longest marketing feature list. Consider whether your files and work can be exported if your needs change.
Our specialist collection on HowGetFree focuses on legitimate opportunities and their conditions. The general lesson here is broader: an accurate label helps you decide whether an offer fits your situation.
